Identifying where undervalued players lie is a crucial factor in planning your draft. When you know where the value lies, it helps you determine where to take specific positions. Below are two tight ends who I find myself selecting frequently in the later rounds, both provide an opportunity to be great value picks.
Jack Doyle, TE12
On Fantasy Football Calculator, Jack Doyle comes in as the 12th tight end off the board. On MyFantasyLeague, he typically slides in at about TE15. Regardless, Doyle makes a fantastic value pick.
Last season with Jacoby Brissett at quarterback, Doyle finished the season sixth in tight end scoring. He finished with 80 receptions, good for second out of tight ends, behind just Travis Kelce. Doyle would’ve had an even bigger year, but the Colts finished 30th in scoring. New Head Coach Frank Reich and a healthy Andrew Luck will certainly help the Colts improve on their pathetic 13 passing touchdowns last season.
The Colts have added Eric Ebron, who will likely be the move tight end but there’s no indication that Doyle won’t be an every-down player. He’s not the sexy selection that David Njoku is but behind T.Y. Hilton, Doyle is poised to finish second in targets on the Colts.
Tyler Eifert, TE14
This one is not for the faint of heart. Tyler Eifert has struggled to stay healthy his entire career. In five seasons, he’s never played a full season.
When Eifert did play 15 games in 2015, he was a value pick and provided a weekly advantage at tight end. He caught 13 touchdowns and finished as TE5.
While it sounds like he’s healthy again, Bengals coach Marvin Lewis said he never wants Eifert to play 50 snaps in a game this season. This could be viewed as positive or negative – playing less frequently reduces his risk of getting injured, but it’s hard to produce without playing.
Regardless, the risk is low. Eifert is so cheap right now that drafting him doesn’t hurt you even if he doesn’t pan out. If he’s healthy, Eifert will likely be second in line for targets behind A.J. Green. That would like make him a reliable TE1 for your fantasy team each week.
