Grab The Facemask: Mock Draft For COVID-19 Relief Recap

Round One

1.01 – Asher Molk: McCaffrey, Christian CAR RB

1.02 – Peter Overzet: Barkley, Saquon NYG RB

1.03 – Shawn Siegele: Kamara, Alvin NOS RB

1.04 – Mike Braude: Elliott, Ezekiel DAL RB

1.05 – Ryan Lopes: Thomas, Michael NOS WR

1.06 – C.D. Carter: Adams, Davante GBP WR

1.07 – Blake Hampton: Henry, Derrick TEN RB

1.08 – T.J. Hernandez: Cook, Dalvin MIN RB

1.09 – Dalton Kates: Hill, Tyreek KCC WR

1.10 – Ben Gretch: Sanders, Miles PHI RB

1.11 – Jack Miller: Jones, Julio ATL WR

1.12 – Anthony Amico: Kelce, Travis KCC TE

Comments: We are using Apex lineup and scoring settings for this league, which means it sets up nicely for owners to use the Zero RB strategy (after all, we have it’s originator Shawn Siegle drafting here). After seeing this list, I assumed there were at least six candidates to go Zero RB: Overzet, Siegele, Braude, Carter, Kates, and myself. The first five picks went just about as expected, as even the most ardent Zero RBer should probably not pass on one of the top running backs this season. The biggest surprise here was Derrick Henry as an RB who does not project for many receptions, but he will end up being worth it if he can come close to repeating his 2019 numbers.

Round Two

2.01 – Anthony Amico: Smith-Schuster, JuJu PIT WR

2.02 – Jack Miller: Kittle, George SFO TE

2.03 – Ben Gretch: Moore, D.J. CAR WR

2.04 – Dalton Kates: Godwin, Chris TBB WR

2.05 – T.J. Hernandez: Mixon, Joe CIN RB

2.06 – Blake Hampton: Chubb, Nick CLE RB

2.07 – C.D. Carter: Hopkins, DeAndre ARI WR

2.08 – Ryan Lopes: Drake, Kenyan ARI RB

2.09 – Mike Braude: Evans, Mike TBB WR

2.10 – Shawn Siegele: Andrews, Mark BAL TE

2.11 – Peter Overzet: Ekeler, Austin LAC RB

2.12 – Asher Molk: Robinson, Allen CHI WR

Comments: Death, taxes, and tight end being extremely top-heavy: all things you can count on year in and year out. Mark Andrews didn’t even make it out of the 2nd round here, and George Kittle and Travis Kelce both went in the top-14. You will begin to see wideouts fly off the board, as D.J. Moore and Chris Godwin both go in the top half of the 2nd – noticeably ahead of their usual Apex ADPs. After none of my preferred wideouts made it to me, I decided to take Allen Robinson and A.J. Brown at the turn:

Round Three

3.01 – Asher Molk: Brown, A.J. TEN WR

3.02 – Peter Overzet: Ertz, Zach PHI TE

3.03 – Shawn Siegele: Golladay, Kenny DET WR

3.04 – Mike Braude: Cooper, Amari DAL WR

3.05 – Ryan Lopes: Beckham, Odell CLE WR

3.06 – C.D. Carter: Edwards-Helaire, Clyde KCC RB

3.07 – Blake Hampton: Jacobs, Josh LVR RB

3.08 – T.J. Hernandez: Jones, Aaron GBP RB

3.09 – Dalton Kates: Ridley, Calvin ATL WR

3.10 – Ben Gretch: Taylor, Jonathan IND RB

3.11 – Jack Miller: Woods, Robert LAR WR

3.12 – Anthony Amico: Kupp, Cooper LAR WR

Comments: Rounds 3 and 4 are really when you see just how highly this group prioritizes wide receivers. Usual 2nd-rounders Clyde Edwards-Helaire, Josh Jacobs, and Aaron Jones feel to the middle/late 3rd round, while Calvin Ridley, Robert Woods, and Cooper Kupp see a boost from their usual spots. Zach Ertz’s selection early in the 3rd just highlights how much smart analysts value top TEs – taking one early is a great way to gain a positional edge this season.

Round Four

4.01 – Anthony Amico: McLaurin, Terry WAS WR

4.02 – Jack Miller: Thielen, Adam MIN WR

4.03 – Ben Gretch: Lockett, Tyler SEA WR

4.04 – Dalton Kates: Jackson, Lamar BAL QB

4.05 – T.J. Hernandez: Chark, D.J. JAC WR

4.06 – Blake Hampton: Mahomes, Patrick KCC QB

4.07 – C.D. Carter: Allen, Keenan LAC WR

4.08 – Ryan Lopes: Fournette, Leonard JAC RB

4.09 – Mike Braude: Sutton, Courtland DEN WR

4.10 – Shawn Siegele: Diggs, Stefon BUF WR

4.11 – Peter Overzet: Metcalf, DK SEA WR

4.12 – Asher Molk: Parker, DeVante MIA WR

Comments: One reason (besides the presence of Zero RBers in this draft) that many wide receivers are going ahead of their usual ADPs is because quarterbacks have fallen precipitously here. Usually, three QBs (Patrick Mahomes, Lamar Jackson, and Kyler Murray) are off the board by the time Kates selected Jackson at 4.04. The wide receiver run continues, as nearly every receiver in this round is off the board a full round or more earlier than their ADPs. So far, half of the teams have spent three of their first four picks on wide receivers, with Kates, Miller, and Amico both without a single running back. Hampton and Hernandez have both zagged while everyone else zigged, with three RBs each and one WR between the two of them.

Round Five

5.01 – Asher Molk: Gallup, Michael DAL WR

5.02 – Peter Overzet: Boyd, Tyler CIN WR

5.03 – Shawn Siegele: Murray, Kyler ARI QB

5.04 – Mike Braude: Gurley, Todd ATL RB

5.05 – Ryan Lopes: Hilton, T.Y. IND WR

5.06 – C.D. Carter: Green, A.J. CIN WR

5.07 – Blake Hampton: Landry, Jarvis CLE WR

5.08 – T.J. Hernandez: Brown, Marquise BAL WR

5.09 – Dalton Kates: Kirk, Christian ARI WR

5.10 – Ben Gretch: Fuller, Will HOU WR

5.11 – Jack Miller: Conner, James PIT RB

5.12 – Anthony Amico: Jones, Marvin DET WR

Comments: Our very own Mike Braude ends Todd Gurley’s fall here. Braude is well-known for his perennial success in the Apex Expert Writers League and goes Zero RB most years there. He bucks that trend here a bit by taking his 2nd RB before his 4th wideout. Many wideouts who are playing the 1B on their teams or are unproven number ones go in this round (Michael Gallup, Tyler Boyd, Jarvis Landry, Marquise Brown, Christian Kirk, Will Fuller, and Marvin Jones). I especially like the Jones selection, who I wrote about here. Carter, Amico, and I are the only owners with 4 wideouts, while Amico doesn’t have a single running back.

Round Six

6.01 – Anthony Amico: Carson, Chris SEA RB

6.02 – Jack Miller: Akers, Cam LAR RB

6.03 – Ben Gretch: Johnson, Diontae PIT WR

6.04 – Dalton Kates: Bell, Le’Veon NYJ RB

6.05 – T.J. Hernandez: Cooks, Brandin HOU WR

6.06 – Blake Hampton: Edelman, Julian NEP WR

6.07 – C.D. Carter: Johnson, David HOU RB

6.08 – Ryan Lopes: Gordon, Melvin DEN RB

6.09 – Mike Braude: Swift, D’Andre DET RB

6.10 – Shawn Siegele: Singletary, Devin BUF RB

6.11 – Peter Overzet: Hardman, Mecole KCC WR

6.12 – Asher Molk: Dobbins, J.K. BAL RB

Comments: After the wide receiver reservoir dried up so quickly, the value at running back really becomes apparent in this round. Usual 4th rounders such as Chris Carson, Le’Veon Bell, David Johnson, and Melvin Gordon have all fallen to the 6th round here, while players like Mecole Hardman become the next-best wideouts available. Perfect timing for Kates and Amico, who get a huge value on their first RBs while being very strong in the WR department

Round Seven

7.01 – Asher Molk: Engram, Evan NYG TE

7.02 – Peter Overzet: Wilson, Russell SEA QB

7.03 – Shawn Siegele: Samuel, Deebo SFO WR

7.04 – Mike Braude: Waller, Darren LVR TE

7.05 – Ryan Lopes: Prescott, Dak DAL QB

7.06 – C.D. Carter: Gronkowski, Rob TBB TE

7.07 – Blake Hampton: Crowder, Jamison NYJ WR

7.08 – T.J. Hernandez: Brown, John BUF WR

7.09 – Dalton Kates: Hunt, Kareem CLE RB

7.10 – Ben Gretch: Watson, Deshaun HOU QB

7.11 – Jack Miller: Slayton, Darius NYG WR

7.12 – Anthony Amico: Lamb, CeeDee DAL WR

Comments: I decided to end the tight end slide by taking one for the first time since the early 3rd round. Engram comes with major health risks, but he is a difference-maker at the weakest position whenever he is on the field. With 4 WRs and 2 RBs, I thought it was time to take the plunge. Darren Waller and Gronk go in this round as well, and Siegele makes a shrewd Deebo Samuel pick here. He could be a real difference-maker after the first few games of the season, giving Siegele a weekly advantage at the flex in the latter half of the season as bye weeks kick in.

Round Eight

8.01 – Anthony Amico: Shenault, Laviska JAC WR

8.02 – Jack Miller: White, James NEP RB

8.03 – Ben Gretch: Harry, N’Keal NEP WR

8.04 – Dalton Kates: Williams, Mike LAC WR

8.05 – T.J. Hernandez: Allen, Josh BUF QB

8.06 – Blake Hampton: Montgomery, David CHI RB

8.07 – C.D. Carter: Ingram, Mark BAL RB

8.08 – Ryan Lopes: Reagor, Jalen PHI WR

8.09 – Mike Braude: Mostert, Raheem SFO RB

8.10 – Shawn Siegele: Henry, Hunter LAC TE

8.11 – Peter Overzet: Hockenson, T.J. DET TE

8.12 – Asher Molk: Miller, Anthony CHI WR

Comments: N’Keal Harry’s selection here becomes much more interesting as news broke of the Patriots’ signing of Cam Newton. James White also looks even better here, as Newton was never afraid to target Christian McCaffrey out of the backfield. Carter ends Mark Ingram’s slide (who in my opinion is a huge value anytime after round 5) while Braude enviably nabs Mostert at the end of round 8. He gets the hyped player near where his arbitrage play (Tevin Coleman) usually goes. The tight end run continues, while I slightly reach on a player that probably wouldn’t have made it back to me (knowing Braude and Kates) in Anthony Miller.
