Reflecting on your process is one of the fastest ways to improve as a fantasy manager. Review your analysis: Which players did you target? Which hits were skill, and which misses were blind spots? More importantly — why?
To help answer those questions, we’re looking at which players truly outperformed the market in 2025. This exercise isn’t about playoff weeks or recency bias. It’s about identifying who provided the most value over the full season.
Why Total Points Don’t Work
Player value must be evaluated relative to position, not by raw totals.
For example, a full-season quarterback like Daniel Jones may outscore a wide receiver such as Tee Higgins in total points. That doesn’t mean he’s more valuable in a one-QB league.
Quarterbacks — even mediocre ones — tend to outscore other positions simply because of scoring structure and availability. So instead of comparing totals, we compare players against a replacement-level baseline at their own position.
Points Above Average
To establish a baseline at each position, I used Fantasy Douche’s original replacement-level framework (formerly on Rotoworld) adjusted for Apex’s lineup and scoring settings:
-
PPR scoring
-
Weekly lineup: QB, 2 RB, 3 WR, TE, Flex, K, D
-
Kickers and defenses excluded due to poor year-over-year predictability
Below are the replacement-level baselines:
| QB | RB | WR | TE | |
| Baseline | 16 | 43 | 60 | 18 |
| Average Season | 295.17 | 206.93 | 183.59 | 176.36 |
| Average Per Game | 18.75 | 13.48 | 12.49 | 12.02 |
Baseline Rank represents the number of starters included in the positional average.
Average Season reflects total replacement-level production.
Average Per Game reflects weekly replacement-level production.
Season vs. Per-Game Value
Even after adjusting by position, there’s still a key question:
Should we evaluate value by total season points or points per game?
-
Seasonal value rewards durability.
-
Per-game value accounts for ceiling and impact when active.
In a league where injuries are common, both metrics matter. A player who missed time can still meaningfully increase your odds of winning when active.
The table above is sorted by Points Above Average Per Game (PAA PG) to fairly account for players who missed time.
Season-long value is listed under PAA S.

Cost Matters: ADP and Surplus Value
Value is not just about production — it’s about production relative to cost.
Average Draft Position (ADP) from Apex drafts in August 2025 is included in the table. A player drafted cheaply who produces elite output creates massive surplus value.
That’s how you win leagues.
Negative PAA values indicate players who finished below replacement level.
Macro Observations from 2025
Here’s how positional scoring shifted compared to last season:
| QB | RB | WR | TE | |
| Season Change | -22.22 | 0.51 | -15.89 | 3.32 |
| Per Game Change | -0.89 | -0.31 | -1.14 | 0.53 |
Quarterback & Wide Receiver Decline
Quarterback scoring took a meaningful hit in 2025. Defenses clearly gained the upper hand in defending the pass.
This ripple effect hit wide receivers even harder. WR scoring dropped by more than a full point per game. Since I began running this analysis in 2018, this is the lowest QB and WR scoring environment we’ve seen.
-
Only four quarterbacks averaged 20+ PPR points per game.
-
Only two wide receivers cleared that threshold.
The offensive contraction was real.
Running Back Stability
Running backs essentially held steady on a seasonal basis (+0.51), though per-game averages dipped slightly (-0.31).
Christian McCaffrey was the only RB to average over 22 PPR points per game. Only five RBs averaged 18+ PPR points per game.
Elite RB production was scarce — and therefore incredibly valuable.
Tight End: Depth Over Dominance
Tight end was the only position that improved year-over-year, though this was more about increased depth than elite production.
Trey McBride was the only TE to average 15+ PPR points per game. The takeaway: top-end offense declined across the board.
2025’s Fantasy Football MVPs
If you haven’t reviewed the table yet, do so.
For the full season, Christian McCaffrey was the most valuable player in fantasy football:
-
209.67 Points Above Average (Season)
-
11.03 PAA per Game
Puka Nacua finished second in seasonal value (191.41 PAA S) and nearly matched CMC on a per-game basis (10.95 PAA PG).
Jaxon Smith-Njigba, Bijan Robinson, Jahmyr Gibbs, Jonathan Taylor, and Ja’Maar Chase round out the top-7 per game.
When referring to 2025’s fantasy football MVPs, the cost or draft position must be mentioned. Chris Olave and George Pickens were drafted outside of the top-55 players and finished as the 11th and 13th most valuable for the season, respectively. Similarly, quarterbacks Drake Maye, Matthew Stafford, and Trevor Lawrence finished top-22 in seasonal value with very cheap costs.
Other huge values include Michael Wilson, Javonte Williams, Kyle Pitts, Wan’Dale Robinson, Harold Fannin, Rico Dowdle, Alec Pierce, and more.
You can toggle between the “PAA S” and “PAA PG” above to see who were the most valuable players last year.
