Quarterback is the hardest position to generalize about in dynasty fantasy football. Tom Brady threw for 5,000 yards at 44. Justin Fields nearly broke the single-season QB rushing record at 23. Both produced elite fantasy seasons—but they did it in almost completely different ways, at almost completely opposite ages.
Any honest analysis of the peak age for an NFL quarterback has to reckon with that fact. The position doesn’t really have a peak age—it has two. Pocket passers and dual-threat QBs follow dramatically different career arcs, and treating them as one group obscures the most important insight in the data.
In this study, we’ll examine every quarterback season since 2000 that cleared 18 PPR points per game, then split the dataset by how a QB earned those points. We’ve already published similar studies for wide receivers, running backs, and tight ends.

TL;DR:
- The overall average peak season for an NFL quarterback happens at age 28.5—the oldest of any skill position
- But pocket passers average a 30.7 peak age while dual-threat QBs average 26.1—a 4.5-year gap
- Dual-threat QBs at age 33 or older: just 4.1% of qualifying peak seasons
- QB rushing production falls off a cliff after age 29 and stays flat through the 30s
- The 2020s are producing more qualifying QBs per year than any previous era
Dynasty takeaway: Before you evaluate a QB’s age, identify his archetype. A 27-year-old rushing QB is closer to the end of his peak than a 27-year-old pocket passer is to the start of his.
Defining a Peak QB Season
To define a peak QB season, we need a threshold that captures genuine QB1 production. Historically, the top 10–12 quarterbacks score above 18 PPR points per game, so we’ll use that as our floor.
Our peak seasons include all quarterback campaigns since 2000 with at least 18 PPR points per game. This gives us 158 qualifying seasons from 55 unique players, compiled using data from Pro-Football-Reference.com.

The average age across the dataset is 28.52 with a median of 27. On the surface, that makes QB the oldest peak age of any skill position—but that average hides more than it reveals.
The range is enormous: from Michael Vick, Lamar Jackson, Cam Newton, and Jalen Hurts qualifying at 22, to Tom Brady qualifying at 44. No other position has anywhere near this spread. The reason becomes obvious once we separate the two QB archetypes.
Pocket Passers vs. Dual-Threat QBs
The defining feature of modern QB play—and the biggest driver of fantasy production—is rushing contribution. To separate pocket passers from dual-threat QBs, we’ll classify each season based on what percentage of total PPR points came from rushing. Seasons with rushing contributions below 15% are pocket passers. Seasons with rushing contribution at 15% or above are dual-threats.
Under this classification, the dataset splits almost evenly—84 pocket passer seasons and 74 dual-threat seasons. The age profiles of these two groups look nothing alike:

The gap is 4.5 years in average age. Over a third of pocket-passer seasons happen at age 33 or older—a threshold that dual-threat QBs almost never reach. Of the 74 dual-threat seasons in the dataset, only three came from QBs age 33+: Aaron Rodgers at 33 (barely over the 15% threshold), Ryan Fitzpatrick at 36, and Rich Gannon at 35.

The dual-threat curve peaks hard at ages 24–26 and collapses after 27. The pocket-passer curve is flatter and extends well into the late 30s. This isn’t a small edge case—it’s the single most important insight in the QB aging data.
Why Rushing QBs Peak Earlier
The mechanism behind this split is visible in the raw rushing data. Looking at average rushing PPR points by age across all qualifying seasons:
- Age 22: 99.1 rushing points
- Age 23: 92.3 rushing points
- Ages 24–27: 58–75 rushing points
- Age 28: 49.2 rushing points
- Age 30: 36.4 rushing points
- Age 33+: under 22 rushing points

QB rushing production drops by roughly two-thirds between ages 22 and 30, and by 80% by age 33. This isn’t subtle. Mobility erodes fast, and once it’s gone, dual-threat QBs can’t maintain their PPR/G because their passing floor usually can’t carry the whole load on its own.
A pocket passer was never getting 80–150 rushing points to begin with. When he reaches 30, he loses almost nothing from his scoring profile. A dual-threat QB relying on 100+ rushing points hits 30 and suddenly needs to replace 60+ points through the air—a much harder adjustment that most never fully make.
Has the QB Aging Curve Changed Over Time?
The NFL has become dramatically more pass-heavy since 2000, and the number of QBs clearing our threshold has grown accordingly. Splitting the dataset into three eras:

The most striking trend is volume. The 2000s averaged just 2.6 QBs per year at this threshold; the 2020s are producing 10 per year. Rule changes favoring the passing game, higher scoring across the league, and the expansion of mobile QBs as a viable archetype have all contributed.
The age picture, however, is more complicated than “QBs are getting younger.” The 2010s were actually the oldest era (29.27 avg)—not because of rule changes but because that decade was peak Brady/Brees/Rodgers/Manning, four Hall of Famers stacking up qualifying seasons deep into their 30s.
The 2020s have pulled the average back down (27.78) as the dual-threat revolution—Allen, Hurts, Jackson, Burrow, Mahomes, Murray, Maye, Williams—has put more young rushing QBs into the top of the QB1 pool. Age-30+ qualifying seasons dropped from 45.3% in the 2010s to 26.7% in the 2020s.

Bottom line: the era effect isn’t “QBs are peaking younger across the board.” It’s “dual-threats make up a bigger share of the top producers than they used to, and dual-threats peak younger.” The underlying pocket-passer curve hasn’t moved much.
When Do Individual QBs Peak?
Looking at each QB’s single best season, the split by archetype sharpens further. Across 55 unique qualifying QBs, the average personal peak age is 27.2. But broken down:
- Dual-threat players (27 QBs): average personal peak age 26.3, median 25
- Pocket passers (28 QBs): average personal peak age 28.1, median 28
Close to a two-year gap in when the typical QB of each archetype has his best fantasy season. And given what we saw with the rushing falloff, that gap likely understates reality—many dual-threat QBs post their rushing peak at 22–23 but their overall best fantasy year comes later once they’ve added passing polish. Lamar Jackson is the archetypal example, peaking at 22 and then again at 26.
Career Longevity at Peak Level
The QB position has a very high one-year-wonder rate. Of the 55 unique QBs to clear this threshold:
- 45.5% did it only once
- 61.8% managed two seasons or fewer
- Only 4 QBs cleared the bar 8+ times: Aaron Rodgers (13), Tom Brady (9), Drew Brees (8), and Josh Allen (7, still active)
- The average career length at this level is just 2.9 qualifying seasons
The QB1 tier is brutally thin. For every Brady or Rodgers who sustained elite production for a decade-plus, there are 4–5 quarterbacks who flashed for a year, maybe two, and then faded. Dynasty managers should treat one-year QB breakouts with skepticism.
QB vs. the Other Positions
Putting all four skill positions side by side:

QB is the position where an established veteran can meaningfully outperform his age curve for longer than anywhere else—especially pocket passers. 14% of qualifying QB seasons happen at 35 or older, a rate 10x higher than tight ends (the next oldest position).

But that longevity is almost entirely concentrated in pocket passers. For dual-threat QBs, the aging curve actually looks closer to a running back’s than a wide receiver’s.
What Happened Last Season
The 2025 season produced nine qualifying QBs and was a near-perfect microcosm of the framework we’ve built in this article. The leaderboard:
- Josh Allen, age 29 (39% rush) — 21.45 PPR/G
- Drake Maye, age 23 (20% rush) — 20.71 PPR/G
- Matthew Stafford, age 37 (0% rush) — 20.61 PPR/G
- Patrick Mahomes, age 30 (25% rush) — 20.41 PPR/G
- Trevor Lawrence, age 26 (27% rush) — 19.89 PPR/G
- Brock Purdy, age 26 (18% rush) — 19.71 PPR/G
- Caleb Williams, age 24 (18% rush) — 18.75 PPR/G
- Jalen Hurts, age 27 (30% rush) — 18.69 PPR/G
- Dak Prescott, age 32 (9% rush) — 18.46 PPR/G
Six of the nine were 29 or younger. Seven were dual-threat. The two pure pocket passers—Stafford (37) and Prescott (32)—were also the two oldest QBs on the list. You couldn’t ask for a cleaner illustration of the framework.
The 37-year-old Stafford finishing third in QB scoring is a reminder that pocket passers genuinely can sustain elite production deep into their 30s—Tom Brady at 44, Brees at 39, Rodgers deep into his mid-30s. But that longevity simply doesn’t exist for rushing QBs.
Dynasty Implications
QB is the position where a one-size-fits-all aging curve is the most misleading. The dynasty takeaways depend heavily on which type of QB you’re evaluating.
- Classify before you value. Before you apply any age-based reasoning to a QB, identify his archetype. A 28-year-old Kyler Murray is closer to decline than a 28-year-old Dak Prescott, even though they’re the same age.
- For dual-threat QBs, the sell window is 27–28. Rushing production falls off a cliff after 29. If a dual-threat QB is pushing 28 and doesn’t have a proven passing floor, he’s a sell candidate at whatever premium the market still assigns him.
- For pocket passers, age matters less than situation. Pocket passers can produce well into their late 30s given a strong supporting cast. Matthew Stafford at 37 (Puka Nacua, McVay) was QB3 in 2025. Don’t sell established pocket passers cheaply just because of a birthday.
- One-year QB breakouts are the riskiest bet in dynasty. 45% of qualifying QBs in this study did it only once. Pay accordingly.
The QB1 tier is smaller than any other peak-production group—only about 6–10 QBs clear it in a given year. The league’s move toward more passing has widened the pool, but the hierarchy inside it remains brutally unforgiving. Know which archetype you own, and price him accordingly.





I think something worth exploring is how rushing QBs age when they’re also goal line threats (Allen, Hurts). Do goal line attempts decline along with attempts and yardage or do they help mitigate aging?
